If it's nothing to do with you, good or bad, it makes me wonder, why bother doing all this research? My husband feels the same way you do - but that's also precisely the reason he has no interest in genealogy, lol.History Chickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07984934236728821742noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5704837170217213689.post-39242902492664369242021-02-21T07:05:29.760-07:002021-02-21T07:05:29.760-07:00I have to say that I do not feel particular person...I have to say that I do not feel particular personal shame myself for the shameful things my ancestors might have done, anymore than I feel personal pride in the good deeds or fame they might have enjoyed.

My ancestors were their own persons and their deeds -- good or bad -- were their own. They did not choose me to be a descendant, nor did I choose them to be my ancestor.

I do think it is important to acknowledge shameful deeds as shameful and not try to explain them away or make excuses. And it is pleasant to think upon the good deeds, as well.

I appear to descend from a number of people who were poor, some who could not read. Am I ashamed of them? No. If I were a descendant of, say a signer of the Declaration of Independence, should I feel personal pride? I say no. What do I have to feel proud about? How does an ancestors personal qualities reflect upon me? It seems so foolish to me.Pennyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02433384213046625719noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5704837170217213689.post-37056302999224621772020-12-27T14:28:07.199-07:002020-12-27T14:28:07.199-07:00And there you go, point proven... hit a nerve, did...And there you go, point proven... hit a nerve, did I? You are clearly not emotionally mature or intelligent enough to comprehend the emotional complexity or process your feelings about topics like this, so you're lashing out by name calling, like a child would. If being a "snowflake" means being more emotionally intelligent than you are, then I'm proud to be one.
