An Oracle Analysis

I'm going to illustrate how I interpret my Oracle results, because I still see a lot of people asking "what do my Oracle results mean?" If you haven't already, you may want to read my intro guide to Gedmatch's Admixture and Oracle, but I'd like to elaborate on that a little bit.

Firstly, it's important to remember that the results can be very speculative and it's best not to take them very literally. People in neighboring regions simply share too much DNA to always be able to tell them apart with accuracy. That means the more narrowed down the areas are in the result, the more speculative it is. You could be German, for example, and get French results because they are neighboring countries who share a lot of DNA. It doesn't mean you're French, it just means this particular calculator put that French/German shared DNA into French instead of German.

Eurogenes K13 Oracle 4, using 4 populations approximation
Secondly, your results are going to be different for each calculator you use so don't just stick to one, explore all those which apply to your background (ie, don't go using Ethiohelix when you're 100% European). Certain calculators may give you more or less accuracy than others. In my personal experience, Eurogenes K13 Oracle 4 (right) isn't very accurate. It really wants me to be Jewish and I'm really not - I have no known Jewish ancestry and don't get any Jewish results from any of the big 4 companies, or in any of Gedmatch's Admixtures. It crops up in the odd Oracle result, but none so much as Eurogenes K13 Oracle 4 populations. I personally have found K15 and EUtest Oracle's to be more accurate, and since K15 is a more recent version of EUtest, that's what I'm going to use to demonstrate how to read Oracle results in some more depth than before.

I find the best thing to do is rather than look at your Oracle results and try to pick one combination that fits you best, or shows the closest distance, look at the results on the whole. Which populations are you seeing the most? Which ones the least? Although I like to look at 4 populations the most because I am primarily from 4 different regions in Europe, you can also look at the 1, 2, and 3 populations modes.

These are my Eurogenes EUtest V2 K15 Oracle 4 results:

1 Orcadian + South_Italian + West_German + West_German @ 4.425306
2 French + South_Italian + West_German + West_Norwegian @ 4.689746
3 South_Italian + Southwest_English + West_German + West_German @ 4.689806
4 East_Sicilian + Orcadian + West_German + West_German @ 4.747531
5 Italian_Jewish + Orcadian + West_German + West_German @ 4.835878
6 East_Sicilian + Southwest_English + West_German + West_German @ 4.850750
7 Italian_Abruzzo + West_German + West_German + West_German @ 4.853912
8 North_Dutch + South_Italian + West_German + West_German @ 4.863277
9 French + Orcadian + South_Italian + West_German @ 4.911067
10 South_Italian + Southeast_English + West_German + West_German @ 4.914701
11 Tuscan + West_German + West_German + West_German @ 4.922722
12 Central_Greek + Orcadian + West_German + West_German @ 4.922800
13 South_Italian + West_German + West_German + West_Norwegian @ 4.927629
14 Irish + South_Italian + West_German + West_German @ 4.941526
15 South_Italian + West_German + West_German + West_Scottish @ 4.958009
16 East_Sicilian + French + West_German + West_Norwegian @ 4.978409
17 East_Sicilian + French + Orcadian + West_German @ 4.982550
18 South_Italian + West_German + West_German + West_German @ 5.005996
19 South_Italian + Spanish_Galicia + West_Norwegian + West_Norwegian @ 5.010231
20 Central_Greek + Southwest_English + West_German + West_German @ 5.011045

So rather than saying the top results must be the most accurate because it's the closest distance, and determining it to be only somewhat accurate because it did identify my German, Italian, and Scottish ancestry, but not my English or Norwegian, let's look at the entire results as a whole.

Map showing my known ancestor's birth
places in Europe
What am I seeing the most? Probably West German. This is very accurate, I have a lot of West German ancestry on both sides of my tree, and I estimate it makes up about 25% of my tree. I also have a couple Swiss-German branches, which is still fairly consistent with West German. There's one ancestor who was from Bavaria, which is a region of Germany more to the east, but I have no idea what part of Bavaria - could have been the western most part for all I know. What I do know is that I rarely ever get admixture/ethnicity results in Eastern Europe and when I do, it's normally in such small portions, it's likely noise. So this is all very consistent with my tree.

I'm also seeing South Italian and some other Italian regions like East Sicilian and Abruzzo. This is incredibly accurate. I do indeed have Sicilian, Abruzzo, and other Southern Italian ancestry. My paternal grandmother was of entirely Italian descent so that makes up another 25% of my tree. My Sicilian branch is a bit more Northern Sicily than Eastern, but that's fairly negligible. There's one count of Tuscan and as far as I know I have no Tuscan ancestry, but that too is probably not very significant since it only shows up once.

There's a few West Norwegians thrown in there, which is also accurate, I have one great grandparent who was Norwegian, making up 12.5% of my tree. Several branches were indeed from Western Norway, although one branch did come from the more Eastern towns of Bamble and Skien.

Map showing my population results for
Eurogenes K15 Oracle 4, compare with above map
You may also notice a few Orcadian and West Scottish populations. This is somewhat accurate, I do have several Scottish or Scots-Irish branches dating back to colonial times, but where exactly in Scotland they were from isn't really known. Orcadian (people from the Orkney Islands) seems a little unlikely as my understanding is most Orcadian immigrants went to Canada through the Hudson Bay Company rather than the US. But if we consider Orcadian as a representation of my Scottish or even British heritage, it makes sense. The Orcadians were also influenced by the Vikings, so there's also a potential connection to my Norwegian side. My overall British branches make up about 34% of my tree, and in addition to Scottish, includes English, so it's not surprising to find a few instances of Southeast or Southwest English. As you can see from the map above, I do indeed have ancestry in Southwest and Southeast England, although I have more recent roots in Northern England, near Manchester so it's a shame it didn't pick this up. It's possible Oracle is underestimating my British ancestry, since there's only a few English populations included, but when you consider how genetically similar the British and Germans are, and knowing how many instances of West German are listed, it makes some sense.

I lastly have a smidgen of colonial Dutch and French Huguenot in my tree but I don't know how realistic it is to expect that to show up in admixture results, as it may have been from too long ago. They make up about 1-2% each of my tree. So when I see a few results for North Dutch and French, I'm taking it with a grain of salt. I'd like to think it could be from colonial ancestry but the way Oracle works by identifying the populations you match most closely, it doesn't seem likely I would closely match a population from so far back in my tree. It seems more likely that it's just being picked up from neighboring regions where I have ancestry.

Likewise, I wouldn't put much thought into the remaining few instances of Italian Jewish, Central Greek, Irish, and Spanish Galicia. Irish is probably just representing my British background, as those two groups are closely related, and likewise, Italian Jewish, Central Greek, and Spanish Galicia may be related to my Italian heritage since they're all from that Mediterranean area. In any case, since there's only one or two counts of them, it's easy to ignore them.

So overall, despite the fact that it doesn't always identify my British/English ancestry as much as it maybe should, it's actually remarkably accurate when you look at it on the whole. Compare the two maps above, one showing the origins of my ancestors and the other showing my Oracle results, and they really aren't far off each other (keeping mind some of the locations for the Oracle map cover a larger area than what the pinpoints represent). Mapping it out is another good, fun way to analyze your admixture or Oracle results, if you'd like to try it, just go to My Google Maps.

I don't normally worry too much about the distance unless it starts getting really high. For example, K13's Oracle has closer distances than K15, but the populations in K15 are far more accurate for me than K13. I am NOT saying K15 is the best option for everyone. When I look at my dad's K15 Oracle results, they are mostly inaccurate, constantly insisting he is Lebanese Druze, which seems very off base. I can't even promise that there will be an Oracle calculator that is as accurate for you as Eurogenes K15 is for me, since I haven't really found one for my dad that is this accurate (he does get a lot of Abruzzo results in various calculators, which is accurate, but there's also a lot of populations that are kind of out there for him).

Also keep in mind some of the calculators contain a lot of ancient (prehistoric) populations. If you see some weird names like "Battle Axe" or "Bell Beaker", these are probably ancient populations (Battle Axe is Neolithic, Bell Beaker is western Europe in late Neolithic-early Bronze Age).

I hope this gives some more detailed insight in how you might interpret your own Oracle results. If you are adopted and don't know your ancestral background, it's difficult to know which calculators will be more accurate than others. You should definitely still take all this with a grain of salt, but it is fun to examine and compare with what we do know.

    1. That's certainly interesting you have results in 13 out of 14 populations, but I probably wouldn't put too much stock in results under about 5%. It's possible Jtest just isn't the best admixture calculator for you. What is your known ancestry?

  3. How did you map it using Google Maps? I tried to copy the "Spreadsheet" into My Google Maps, but it didn't go. I'm hoping I'm doing something wrong, and there's an easy way to do it. :)

    1. You have to search for each location individually, then click "add to map". You can also add spots manually by clicking "add marker" at the top, then clicking where you want to add a marker.

    2. I have the same question. When I do a search on say, "East_Med", I get the name of an Eastern Mediterranean doctor's office in NYC. Is there a Google Map option specifically for interpreting the Oracle-4 results?

    3. GJ, places that don't have political boundaries but are just geographical regions like East Mediterranean aren't official areas so they won't be in Google maps. But you can add your own markers wherever you want in My Google Maps - just click the "add marker" button at the top (under the search bar).

  4. Was wondering about the meaning of the column headings that appear in spreadsheet of Admixture/Oracle with Population Search. Having for example Mesoamerican as the column and Apache as the row with 34.53 and then the NorthAmerind column with 43.81 in the Apache row. I think this is an indication confirming the small percentage of American Indian ancestors I have from a long time ago. Correct or not?

    1. There is a good explanation of the Spreadsheet feature available here: http://www.rootsandrecombinantdna.com/2015/12/gedmatchs-new-spreadsheet-feature.html - It is not your personal results, it simply tells you more about the reference populations. If you check the spreadsheet for multiple different kits, you'll see they are the same for everyone.

    1. Well, the single population results are mostly 20+ distance so they're not very close matches, and I wouldn't put much stock in them. Your 4 population results seem fairly typical for someone Puerto Rican - a mix of Native American and European. I don't see much African in there apart from Moroccan and Mozabite. Your European results look like they might be part Southern and part Northern.

    1. The numbers after @ are how closely you match that population (or combination of populations). So the smaller the number, the more closely you match that population. The 1 population approximations are above 10, so I'd consider them fairly distant. The 4 population approximation has closer numbers - looks like it's mostly saying you're European (mostly Scandinavian), Native American (mostly Apache), and Middle Eastern. That is fairly typical for Mexicans, who tend to be either (or a mix of) European and Native American, and sometimes African.

  7. Thank you for your very useful posts! Having uploaded to Genmatch Genesis and finding no close relatives, I started dabbling in the admixture area without a clue how to interpret the results but am feeling more confident after reading your articles, especially the information that there are few English populations included in the Eurogenes tests. My grandparents' origins: England (Somerset, Coventry, Manchester) and Ireland (1st 2 more certain as I've never met my natural father). But my top results from K13 and K15 were West Scottish, Orcadian and South-East English.
The map at https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-017-17124-4/figures/1 really helps to make more sense of British Isles results.
    My observations:
    1. West Scottish could equally be Northern Irish (protestant I assume) due to large scale relatively recent migrations.
    2. South-East English covers most of the country, certainly including Coventry, maybe Manchester too.
    3. Orkney is one of the most intensely researched areas of the British Isles which may be why it is over represented in many people's results; also it is more closely related to Southern Irish than the rest of the UK, which I did not expect.
    4. Somerset is completely absent from the map which surprised me as it is the sort of county with deep rural pockets where finding people with 4 locally born grandparents should be easy; so the South-West English category may only represent Devon & Cornwall (I did get some South-West but much lower down than I was expecting).

    1. Keep in mind the samples and populations used for the Irish DNA Atlas are probably not the same as those used for Eurogenes, so I wouldn't assume Eurogenes has as many Orkney samples as this project does.

The Orkney samples being most similar to Southern Ireland might have to do with Viking influences.

    1. Not necessarily - with certain calculators I also get a lot of results for Jewish populations, but I have no known Jewish ancestry. You have six mixed mode populations that are estimated a closer match to you and don't include Jewish - if you have no record of Jewish ancestry, I'd take it with a grain of salt, especially if you get no Jewish results with whatever company you tested with.

  9. I think I'm following all of this, but I can't seem to figure out a few abbreviations. UA and PL

    Using 1 population approximation:

    Help?

    1. The two letter abbreviations are normally standard country abbreviations - so UA is Ukraine and PL is Poland. There's a good reference chart here: http://sustainablesources.com/resources/country-abbreviations/

  10. I am curious what you make of this. All four of my mother's grandparents are Irish. One from North Leitrim, One, South Tipperary, Two from Cork. Yet this Euro v2 K15 basically screams Orkney. Thoughts? Btw, love your blog. Very helpful.

    1. Keep in mind Ireland and Scotland do share a lot of DNA in general because of the Celtic factor. I don't know why the Orkney Islands in particular comes up, that does seem to happen to a lot of people on some calculators so I don't know whether there aren't a lot of other Scottish samples so Orkney is just coming up as a default Scottish result or what. There's an interesting map of a study done - this is nothing to do with Gedmatch's calculators but you can see there seems to be more samples from Orkney than anywhere else in Scotland: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-017-17124-4/figures/1

  12. Very informative posts, I really appreciate them! I was curious, what does the V in some of the results mean, such as Norwegian_V, German_V, etc... I have it a lot in my results, but can't figure out what it means... Also, do you know of any good listings for the Ancient DNA populations (Halberstadt_LBA, Unetice_EBA, etc...)?

    1. I don't know that the _V suffix means anything. Ancient populations can be difficult to identify sometimes but I often have luck just googling it. Unetice EBA for example is from the Unetice culture: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unetice_culture - EBA probably stands for Early Bronze Age. Likewise, I think LBA is Late Bronze Age. Halberstadt is a town in Germany so I'm guessing it's a Germanic population.

  13. Hi there, I was hoping you could help me interpret these results I got using Oracle-4 on both Eurogenes K13 and Eurogenes K15 V2. I should start by saying I only know my maternal ancestry, I’ve never met my Father and know nothing about him, my Mom is Mexican on her maternal side, and Irish and Slovakian on her paternal. Though I assume my father is Mexican based off of results I’ve gotten from 23andme and AndestryDNA, which are overwhelmingly a combination of Native American, Iberian and Southern European with splashes of Eastern European and Irish.

Now what I’m confused about is the “French_Basque” showing up seemingly everywhere on both calculators. Assuming I’m about 75% Mexican, I expected to get just different forms of Spanish and Native American, while I do get a lot of Spanish the French_Basque is just bizarre to me.

    Thanks for any insight.

    1. Basque is a region that covers both Spain and France so it's not surprising to see someone with Spanish ancestry get results in French Basque. I would imagine is there not much genetic difference between Spanish Basque and French Basque and it looks like K13 and K15 don't have populations specifically for Spanish Basque, only French.

  14. Hey so I just did an Oracle test (Gedrosia K3 4-Ancestors Oracle) and I found something a little unusual. In the 3 population approximation I somehow managed to get a perfect distance so, apparently accurate to the dot (0.0000) To put things into perspective, I have known Iranian, Afghani and North Indian ancestry but only upto my great grandparents. Can I consider this test to be as accurate as it's showing (0.0000)? Thanks in advance, I've posted my results below too so you can have a look.

  15. I want to share my results with everyone here. I am still doing my best to interpret what they mean. It appears that the 58% Native American result (27.9 Mesoamerican + 20.4 North-Amerind + 1.06 Arctic Amerind + 8.57 South-America_Amerind) from AncestryDNA were fairly spot on, albeit very vague. It's interesting to note that I am getting results from every region. When you go into the 1-4 population sections its both bewildering and frustrating since I do not know what to make of it. Single population shows I am closest to Serrano Indigenious tribe, 2nd and 3rd show Colombian with some Native. When you get to the 4th population approximation it's just so daunting a chart to look at but I am doing my best. Bit of background, I do not really know my father since he left when I was 1 yr old but I know he is a Mexican from Monterrey Mexico. My mother's parents were Spanish(father) and Mexican (mother). So trying to piece it all together by researching all that I can. Here are my results on GEDMatch. If anyone can help me interpret this better I'd appreciate it.

    1. There's a number of options for mixed ancestry but I can't really recommend any myself since I'm not of mixed ancestry. 1. It looks like this is Eurogenes, either K13 or K15? The admixture seems to think you are primarily Northwest European and Eastern European. The rest aren't necessarily in high enough numbers to put much stock in (for example, the Irish and some Scottish populations in K13 get about 12% in West Med, so 10.87% might not mean anything). Oracle seems to have a lot of Danish and a good deal of Southeast English. Maybe there's something to that, maybe not - as discussed, K13 was very far off the mark for me in Oracle. It really depends on the individual which calculator will be best or most accurate, which is why it's a bit of a guessing game for adoptees, unfortunately.

    1. According to Dodecad World9's spreadsheet, this calculator has no populations from Venezuela that I could find. Given the proximity of Venezuela and Brazil, and the fact that they both have had lots of immigration from Spain and Italy (where you also have ancestry), the Brazilian population must have been the closest thing to Venezuelan.

I used the Eurogenes K15 and it was pretty accurate for what I know to be true.My father is mainly of British/German ancestry while my mother is half Portuguese with most of the rest of her ancestry coming from Great Britain, with a smidge of Swedish.I was shocked to see just how accurate it was by mostly showing spanish_galicia and spanish_castilayleon the two areas of Spain closest to Portugal.Anyway here are my results.

  21. I took a DNA test with myheritage and I came up to be 8% Greek. The most accurate calculator for me at GEDmatch is MDLP-World and it tells me that I am 31,4% Southhern and Western European. Also, using other calculaters, I score fairly high in Southern European when MyHeritage said I am only 8% Southern European. What does this mean!

My daughter-in-law is a native of Taiwan and has always assumed her heritage to be Han Chinese on both her paternal and maternal sides.
However both of these Oracle results suggest substantial amounts of aboriginal Taiwanese Ami, with Naga and/or Nganasan in her genome.
The Ami are a Taiwanese aboriginal tribe while the Naga are aboriginal to Myanmar and NE India while the Han are relatively recent arrivals to Taiwan.

I realize admixture estimate are not at all absolute and that Asian population are not nearly as well represented as are Europeans but I'm wondering just how robust I can expect these results to be and how much confidence we should place in them, whether any potential Ami or other aboriginal component of her ancestry is worth seriously investigating further.

I particular, I be interested to know if the Ami, Naga and Nganasan populations upon which these Oracle comparisons to her kit are based are reasonably large or do they only consists of a few individuals? Who supplies this reference population data?

    I've copied her K3 & K6 Oracle results below.
Note that the minimum distance 0.00 is achieved with K3 Oracle Using 3 populations approximation. This is considerably smaller than the next closet population combination. 1 50% Ami +25% Ami +25% Nganasan @ 0.000000

  24. hello. i am trying to understand the distance thing here. i have affirmed part of my ethnicity by the history of my northern italian ancestors who were actually moroccan spanish italian jews of bassano del grappa italy and imported to england as musicians for king henry the 8th as woodwind instrument makers. the history on them is well documented so i see what is recognizable about them in the places mentioned but don't understand what the distance numbers mean. would you mind interpreting this a little for me? thank you! --

    1. The distance number is how closely (or distantly) you match that population. So the closer the number is to 0, the more closely you match that group.

  25. Hello! I uploaded my DNA raw data file to GedMatch and I have some doubts I couldn't solve after researching in some forums and blogs. I am Spanish but I don't look like typical spanish (Very tall, pale, clear eyes).
There is a great percentage of North European genes in my results (40% to 60%) And I have some questions.

    What means North_Atlantic in K13?
    Western_European and North_Sea in K12?
    And finally North_European in K9b?

    Thanks and regards.

    1. The spreadsheets are where you want to look to see what areas a certain category peaks in. Populations that get the highest results in North Atlantic for K13:

      West_Scottish
      French_Basque
      Irish
      Southwest_English
      Orcadian
      Norwegian
      Southeast_English
      North_Dutch
      Danish
      Swedish
      North_German
      South_Dutch
      North_Swedish
      Spanish_Aragon
      West_German
      French
      Southwest_French
      Spanish_Cantabria
      Spanish_Cataluna
      Spanish_Castilla_La_Mancha
      Spanish_Castilla_Y_Leon
      Spanish_Valencia
      Spanish_Murcia
      Spanish_Andalucia
      Portuguese
      Spanish_Galicia
      Spanish_Extremadura
      East_German
      Austrian
      Hungarian
      North_Italian

So it's not unusual to be Spanish and get high results in this category.

Unfortunately there's no spreadsheet for K12 but Western Europe probably covers everything west of roughly Poland - there does not seem to be any separate category for Iberian so I would guess it's included in Western Europe. North Sea is areas that border the North Sea - Scandinavia, British Isles, possibly north/central Europe like Germany, Netherland, Belgium. That means there is likely overlap between the two regions (both probably covering some of the British Isles and north/central Europe).

North European in K9b is a very broad area - basically all of Europe which doesn't border the Mediterranean, but may also include northern parts of Spain and France. Hard to say with no spreadsheet.

But if you think your ancestry is not what you thought it was (like there might be a non-paternity event somewhere), it's best to explore this with your DNA matches, not with ethnicity.

    2. Well, I am so tall and pale for being Spanish. Only wanted to know which areas covers that DNA. I've uploaded my DNA raw data to DNA.LAND and also shows great percentage from Scotland/Norway/Denmark. So I think it's Ok :)

  26. Hey History Chick!

Your blog is quite intriguing and has provided a lot of information for my genetic research. As the daughter of an adoptee, GEDMatch has been an amazing tool for me to figure out my heritage. However, the only part I would disagree with you on is your Jewish Oracle results. If you’re constantly getting results like Italian-Jewish and Kurdish-Jewish, it’s probably likely that you had a Sephardic or Italkian (Romanioteh great grandparent. If your dad’s getting half Lebanese, that’s a strong sign his Italian side had a good amount of Jewish admixture. There were a lot of crypto-Jews in southern Italy who outwardly practiced Catholicism to avoid the stigma. It’s pretty common in Sicily and Calabria, and I’m doing research on Jews in Abruzzo with another guy who has ancestry from the same province as me. I had one great grandpa from Abruzzo and I’m pretty sure his family was Sephardic and Italkian-Romaniote Jewish based on the names I’ve found in the family tree and based on my DNA results.

This is what I got in Eurogenes K13.

    1 78.1% Orcadian + 21.9% Italian_Jewish @ 1.7
    2 83.3% Southeast_English + 16.7% Tunisian_Jewish @ 1.79
    3 81.9% Southeast_English + 18.1% Sephardic_Jewish @ 1.83
    4 83.5% Southeast_English + 16.5% Libyan_Jewish @ 1.96
    5 82% Southeast_English + 18% Italian_Jewish @ 1.96
    6 78.1% Orcadian + 21.9% Sephardic_Jewish @ 2.02
    7 79.8% Orcadian + 20.2% Tunisian_Jewish @ 2.07
    8 86.3% Southeast_English + 13.7% Samaritan @ 2.1
    9 82.5% Southeast_English + 17.5% Algerian_Jewish @ 2.12
    10 78.8% Orcadian + 21.2% Algerian_Jewish @ 2.14
    11 77.2% Southwest_English + 22.8% Ashkenazi @ 2.2
    12 86.6% Southeast_English + 13.4% Lebanese_Christian @ 2.22
    13 80.2% Southeast_English + 19.8% Ashkenazi @ 2.23
    14 76.5% West_Scottish + 23.5% Italian_Jewish @ 2.24
    15 80% Orcadian + 20% Libyan_Jewish @ 2.28
    16 77.5% Southeast_English + 22.5% West_Sicilian @ 2.35
    17 74.2% West_Scottish + 25.8% Ashkenazi @ 2.35
    18 85% Southeast_English + 15% Cyprian @ 2.37
    19 86% Southeast_English + 14% Palestinian @ 2.37
    20 73% Orcadian + 27% West_Sicilian

The oracle number is pretty small and it’s pretty consistent, and I’ve noticed we’ve gotten similar results. Most of my European heritage is northwestern European...a mix of Irish and English and Scottish and German.

    1. My dad is not getting "half" Lebanese. In K15 Oracle 4, he is getting several hits for Lebanese Druze, but only in 4 populations - mean 1 out of 4, and not for every result either. Plus, he's really descended from 3 populations (Italian, German, and Scots-Irish) so 4 populations may not be ideal for him. Maybe if he had Jewish results in anything other than Oracle, that would be better evidence of an unidentified Jewish ancestor, but he doesn't. Also, consider the fact that my grandfather, who is not Italian at all (let alone Italian-Jewish), also gets several results for Italian or Italian Jewish or Middle Eastern Jewish populations too. There comes a point when you have to accept that Gedmatch's Admixture/Oracle are not necessarily very reliable and definitely should not be taken too literally.

    2. what is your non NW euro ancestry? do you have documented sephardi ancestry?

      Delete
  27. Getting ¼ Lebanese-Druze in the Oracle-4 makes more sense. That was a misunderstanding on my part.

What percentage Jewish does your non-Italian/Jewish grandfather get in the Oracles? Sometimes, in the Oracle-2 populations, people get a large percentage of one ethnicity and a small percentage of another. I’m part English and a lot of my English cousins get something like 95% Southeast English, 5% [insert some type of South Asian].

I’m a mathematician, and something that’s super important in that type of field is looking at the general trend. You can apply that to genetics too. In my case, I do get Jewish, Middle Eastern and North African DNA on the DNA tests I’ve taken. Every company uses a different algorithm so looking and seeing what most websites pick up is important. I think it’s also important to notice what’s strange. As I said before, my Italian ancestors had Sephardic names and I observed some Sephardic naming customs they incorporated. This was proven genetically when I triangulated some of my Italian cousins and I with a Caucasian-Bukharian Jew, so doing genealogical research AND genetic research is important!

I appreciate your response. If there’s no evidence of Jewish ancestry on any site and you lack Jewish (Ashkenazi, Sephardic, Mizrahi, etc.) cousins in your match lists, then you probably inherited a lot of Sicilian DNA since Sicily is very Arab-influenced.

I appreciate your response and insight!

  28. heeeeey History Chick :)

Thanks so much for this amazing informative blog!! I hope you can help me solve my case...

I have suspicion that my dad is not my biological father after doing the 23andme test.

Ive made now extensive research as to where my family is from. Asking my aunts and uncles etc... to figure out if I have any irish or english blood from my dads side. Turns out I dont!!! NOTHING

On 23andme my results are 95%Irish and english.

My mom is irish, generations over generation from Donegal, Ireland.
My dad is german, but his father has roots in france and my dads mother has slavic roots.

I now have used gedmatch to see if I can see anything pointing out that my dad is my biological father.

These are my results... maybe you can help me make sense of it:

  30. I was wondering whether K13 Oracle results could be taken literally because it spits out a lot of Jewish for my half-Sicilian mother, as well. Do you know if maybe Sicilian and Sephardic Jewish are just too close for Oracle to tell apart sometimes?

K15 Oracle 2 really wants my mother to be Jewish, too (The Orcadian and English would come from her father of mostly British ancestry):

    # Primary Population (source) Secondary Population (source) Distance
    1 56.7% Orcadian + 43.3% Sephardic_Jewish @ 2.29
    2 55.6% Orcadian + 44.4% Italian_Jewish @ 2.89

    1. No admixture or oracle results should be taken literally. If you don't get any Jewish results from other companies, I wouldn't put much stock in it.

  32. I am from southern Italy (Puglia), like my four grandparents and also great-grandparents.
Help! My MyHeritage results look very different from the various Gedmatch options, especially for the percentage of North African in muheritage and the ever-present values of Ashkenazi in gedmatch. My father says we have Jewish ancestors. It's possible? Thanks for an answer.

  33. HELP!
I have a suspected Sephardic Jewish ancestor bc my father has dutch roots and scores levantine on ftdna and also on 23andme. Also, my y-hap is t-70 (not native to N Europe) and is found mostly amongst Sephardic Jews. Here are my results.
I also believe we have Romani ancestry, as we score anatolian and south-asian on 23andme (indicative of Romani)....here are his punDNAL results (below mine).
